If you enjoy reading, organizing, walking, assisting with errands, and friendly visits than becoming a CNIB Vision Mate is the perfect opportunity for you!
Becoming a CNIB Vision Mate volunteer you would provide regular one-to-one assistance and companionship for a person who is blind or partially sighted.
Activities are determined by client need and mutually agreed upon. Volunteers do not drive clients, cook, clean or do heavy lifting. All outings are on foot or public transit. Good communication, dependable, patient, empathetic, friendly and a desire to assist a blind or partially sighted person. Experience with seniors an asset, but not required.
Orientation, including; About CNIB, about the people we help, about vision loss, about volunteering at CNIB. Overview of orientation and mobility services and sighted guide techniques provided during training session. Training specific to the position of Vision Mate also provided.
1-2 hrs a week for a minimum of 6 months. Volunteer and client coordinate own schedule.
